Grand gateway to the Showa Era,
the intersection of tradition and technology
The Great Torii Gate was built in 1928 to commemorate the ascension of Emperor Hirohito (1901–1989) to the Chrysanthemum Throne. The impressive gate is 24 meters tall and 18 meters wide.

It is made in the style of a traditional myojin torii gate but was built using modern building technology, such as steel frames and reinforced concrete. Characterized by its imposing pillars, this gate is a popular landmark within the Okazaki area of Kyoto and an invaluable architectural structure that displays the unification of traditional and modern techniques.

myojin torii gate
This is one of the two primary torii gate styles. It has three distinguishing characteristics: two lintels with arched ends, pillars that slope inward toward the top of the gate, and a lower crossbeam that passes through and protrudes from the pillars. Compared to the straight lines of the shinmei torii gate style, the myojin torii gate is characterized by its use of curves.

Emperor Showa (Hirohito)
Emperor Showa (1901–1989), also known as Emperor Hirohito, was the 124th emperor of Japan. He reigned from 1926 to 1989.
